Outbound Overnight, The Midlands (4 star) – 1 night
The Cheltenham Chase Hotel, Cheltenham (4 star) – 4 nights
This morning we travel from Dublin Port across to Holyhead and travel to our hotel in the Midlands for our evening meal and overnight.
Following breakfast, we check out of our hotel, board the coach and travel to Shakespearean Stratford Upon Avon in the heart of Warwickshire. Our local tour guide takes us on a guided tour by coach and foot of this fascinating town. There will be some free time for lunch before we travel south to the picturesque 15th century Sudeley Castle with its beautiful royal gardens and interesting interior. Sudeley Castle was the home of Catherine Parr, wife of Henry VIII, and the place where she is buried. The Castle is now the home of Lady Ashcombe, wife of the 4th Baron, and her family
The final leg of our journey takes us to nearby Cheltenham, our base for the next 4 nights. Dinner is included tonight at our hotel
Following a leisurely breakfast, we board the coach and travel to the pretty medieval town of Malmesbury, just on the edge of The Cotswolds, a town steeped in history dating back to the Iron Age. We visit the beautiful private gardens of Abbey House Gardens, a romantic oasis of calm in the heart of the town. We will enjoy a private guided tour of the spectacular 5-acre garden, straddling the River Avon, by the owners, followed by time to ramble around the grounds. Our next stop is to the 7th century Malmesbury Abbey founded by St Aldhelm. In the 10th Century, Athelstan, the first king of (all) England and grandson of Alfred the Great, made Malmesbury his capital. He is buried under the abbey grounds. Take some time to explore the honey stoned streets and quaint 17th & 18th century shops and inns and perhaps visit the Athelstan Museum, home to a fascinating collection of artefacts and explanation of local history.
We return to our hotel in Cheltenham for dinner and overnight.
Enjoy a wonderful scenic day touring the Cotswolds quintessential countryside by luxury coach. Discover some of the prettiest villages and medieval towns in the heart of England where time has stood still for over 300 years
Our morning begins with a gently paced tour of Cheltenham with our local tour guide. Board the 11am Steam Train owned by Gloucestershire Warwickshire Steam Railway, travel through the picture perfect countryside on a 1 hour trip to Broadway, also known as ‘The Jewel in The Crown’ of the Cotswolds. We’ll have a little free time to explore before climbing onboard the coach and continuing our day visiting The Cotswolds.
Our day is a haven of green-cloaked hills, rose-clad cottages, thatched roofs, charming traditional picture-perfect houses. Sit back and relax and enjoy hearing all the local history to compliment the stunning scenery. We dine together at our hotel.
Please note that many of these beautiful villages have traffic restrictions and weight limits, all coaches must go to coach parks / car parks and guests will need to walk to the village centre. Drop off points are never in the centre of the villages and guests with mobility issues will need to consider this before booking.
Enjoy an excursion to Blenheim Palace and Oxford. Blenheim Palace, home to the 11th Duke and Duchess of Marlborough, gifted by Queen Anne and a grateful nation to John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough, and ancestor to Sir Winston Churchill, following his famous victory at the Battle of Blenheim in 1704. Our visit today includes the gilded State Rooms and the fascinating visitor experience ‘The Untold Story’ which delves into the history and background of this extraordinary British family.
During the afternoon we visit the University City of Oxford for a gently paced walking tour of this city, experience its alluring mix of majestic architecture and youthful scene the University attracts. Enjoy dinner together this evening at our hotel.
We leave after breakfast for our journey to Holyhead ferry port and travel across the Irish Sea to Dublin Port and onwards to our original pickup points with wonderful memories of our time visiting The Cotswolds.
