Hotel: The Twin Trees Hotel, Ballina (3 star)
We leave for Ballina in Co. Mayo, travelling across the varied landscape of Leinster and Connacht, arriving late afternoon to our hotel. Join your group for dinner this evening and music in the bar afterwards.
Today we travel out north west towards the Céide Fields passing by Killala Bay. Our day continues with a drive through the county of May towards the windswept shores of Mullet Peninsula, hugging the rugged edge of the Broad Haven and Atlantic coast line. Return to our hotel in Ballina for dinner.
Our visit today is to the Atlantic Sheepdogs to watch some of the world’s smartest sheepdogs, working in their natural environment. Martin Feeney, who together with his dogs, have represented Ireland on an International stage on numerous occasions over the past twenty years, demonstrates how sheepdogs are used to move sheep around mountains and fields, on a typical Irish farm. You will also learn how the dogs are trained, about the many different breeds of sheep reared on the Atlantic Sheepdogs Farm and all about life of the farm.
We then make our way to the shores of Lough Gill which straddles Co. Sligo and Co. Leitrim. We take a trip on the Rose of Innisfree cruise boat and enjoy a scenic journey on one of Irelands’ most beautiful lakes. See the Isle of Innisfree (which inspired WB Yeats’ popular poem), Church Island, Dooney Rock, Slish Wood and many, many more.
Lissadell House set in the rugged beauty of the Sligo countryside, with Ben Bulben as its dramatic backdrop is our destination today. We’ll have a private tour of this historic gem, forever associated with Constance Gore-Boorth who, born into power and privilege in 1868, turned away from that life with her sister Eva to seek justice and equality via the Suffragette movement and later for Constance in the fledgling Irish Citizen Army.
The tour takes you through the Main House, the servant’s basement area and allows you time to wander through the exquisite Alpine Gardens perched above the ocean.
Today, after a delicious Irish breakfast we take the spectacular Atlantic Drive, heading out to Achill Island and across its famous bridge. Learn about Granuaile, the legendary Pirate Queen of the 16th century whose base was on the south of Clare Island and who built the tower house in Kildavnet.
This morning, we check out and travel home, first stopping at the Museum of Country Life in Turlough to view the National Folk Life Collection. The museum is spread over 4 floors showing life in Ireland as it was between the Great Famine and the 1950’s. Spend some time enjoying this excellent museum before boarding the coach home and saying farewells to newfound friends.
